Red Rock Dusting

I sometimes like to use only 1 brush for a painting.  I feel I can learn better brush handling as well as controlling the use of only portions of the bristles as needed.  it can be a challenge but I feel the effort is worth the learning experience.  This painting was done entirely with a #24 long handled brush using a dry brush method wet into wet with a loose painterly style. This was also done without a sketch or drawing - a level line was drawn in for the horizon and the rest is brush work.

The Brush

This painting is 10 x 20 on heavy linen paper.  Painted in a loose painterly style with the bright and bold colors so well know in the Southwest.  The Southwest holds a special place in my heart having live in Arizona for 7 years and New Mexico for 5 years.

Hope you enjoyed this presentation

High Country Grasses

Yo my friends,

Well, my mind is back in the Southwest!

This painting is 6 x 18 and depicts a high desert scene with desert grasses.  A combination of palette bushes and regular brushes brings about a nice texture to the piece.  This will be for sale in my ETSY store in a couple of days.

Thanks for looking.

Regatta No. I - II - III

Yo Folks,

I love painting with a palette knife and I also love to let loose and paint in a loose semi - abstract style I fInd it to be very liberating.  However the downside is a lot of paint is used and that is costly - so I only let loose once in a while!

Regatta I was posted a short time ago, but I'll put it in this post so you can see all three.  I suppose there may be more of these but first I need to save up for some more paint!!!  :>(

I hope you enjoyed this post - a loose painterly semi abstract style of painting is not everyone's cup of tea but this is merely an extension of my already looses/painterly style - the exception being one can become very loose with a palette knife thereby giving a tremendous amount of texture to the piece.  Texture and bright bold color can be shocking to some but for me the process is a total enjoyment.

Yo my friends

I'm back into the Southwest again - a place that is near and dear to my heart.

This painting is 12 x 24 done in a loose painterly style and is what I call a "Mindscape" in that it is painted from my memory vision of places I have been.  I use no photos in its creation - just my minds eye of past journeys.

This should be in my ETSY store in a few days.  (see link at beginning of blog)

Too much chocolate

This is a palette knife painting done in a style somewhat like that of Leroy Neiman. I woke up this morning with the "jitters" like a 10 year old high on an overdose of chocolate - I now feel much better.

18 x 24 on heavy linen paper - Chroma Interactive acrylics - alla prima - done very quickly with palette knife and lots of paint for a very chunky look. Spontaneity was the operative word and color was what I felt at the moment of application - no predetermined plan - path or outcome.

VERY LIBERATING!!!!

Every once in a while one needs to go outside the BOX and be a little bit "wild and crazy".

I hope you enjoyed this post as I had a BLAST doing the painting.

Back to the Gulf of Mexico

Yo my friends,

Well I'm back into my Gulf of Mexico frame of mind.

This is 24 x 18 on heavy linen paper.  The west side of Florida - on the Gulf of Mexico is a very beautiful area the landscape - foliage - and the water is breath taking.  The waters mimic the colors of the Caribbean - this along with the reflected colors from the sun and all the little "shiny things" in the sand provide some beautiful color.  If you squint - you can see many, many colors.

Canyon Dusting

Yo my friends,

Sedona AZ is a very beautiful place - it's beauty is much like the Grand Canyon and Zion - Sedona is a place to be seen and its beauty to be enjoyed.

This painting is 8 x 10 and represents the frequent dusting of snow that falls in Sedona.  They can get more than a dusting - several inches as a matter of fact - but with the red rock landscape and the red dirt the dusting is IMHO the prettiest of all their snow.

Box Canyon

Yo my friends,

Arizona is constantly in my heart and mind - having lived there for 7 years the desert and the overall scenery is ever present in my being. The Sedona area is Red Rock Country and this painting depicts its beauty as I see it.

Warm Breezes No. II

Yo my friends,

I have a couple more southwest paintings in the works but this morning I thought I would give some time to my second most favorite landscape - the ocean - specifically The Gulf of Mexico.  The Gulf is of course on the west side of Florida and has amazing color in its waters.  Very much like the Caribbean waters.

This painting is 12 x 20 done on heavy linen paper in a loose painterly style with gusto, spontaneity and a love for this coastline.

Out To The Mesas

HAPPY NEW YEAR BLOG BUDDIES,

This morning I decided to continue my southwest frame of mind.  Being one who has lived in the Southwest as well as the East Coast - ocean side and in southwest Florida - Gulf of Mexico I have a love for both the desert and the ocean.  I am more of a desert person than an ocean person.

This painting is 8 x 20 on heavy linen paper done alla prima with professional acrylic paints.  There is a bit of texture in the painting - especially on the mesas which were done very quickly with my "palette brushes".  These are brushes that I have altered and I use them very much in the same manner as palette knives.

To my eyes the Southwest is totally alive with color - squinting will bring about many colors that you have never seen before and of course spontaneity in painting will bring these colors alive.

This is painted in a loose-painterly style which is a style I am constantly working on and perfecting to the best of my artistic ability.
